Overview
Japanese Rail Sim 3D: Journey in Suburbs #1 (known in Japan as Tetsudou Nippon! Rosen Tabi: Nagaragawa Tetsudou-hen, which loosely translates to "Railway Japan! Every Route: Nagaragawa Railway Edition") is a train driving simulation game developed and published by Sonic Powered for the Nintendo 3DS in Japan on September 26, 2013 (as a retail release) and in North America from June 11, 2015 to March 23, 2016 (as downloadable "Volumes").
The first in a series of train driving simulators, Journey in Suburbs #1 follows the complete Nagaragawa Railway line in the Japanese Gifu Prefecture (from Mino-Ōta in Minokamo to Hokunō in Gujō) on the Nagara 300 diesel train. Similar to similar train driving simulators, such as the Densha de Go! series, players are tasked with driving the train in a first-person perspective along a set route. The game uses controls representing a mascon and brake, which players use to maintaining the correct speed and route timing.
Similar to the Train Simulator and Railfan series, Japanese Rail Sim 3D uses real-life footage for full-motion video, showing a front-facing perspective of the train being driven. The game also includes an unlockable guidebook to the areas encountered and their surroundings.
While the Japanese version includes the full route, the overseas version is split up into four "Volumes", with the first volume released on June 11, 2015 and the rest released on March 23, 2016. Each Volume handles a different part of the route:
