Overview
Japanese Rail Sim 3D: Travel of Steam (known in Japan as Tetsudou Nippon! Rosen Tabi: Kikansha Thomas-hen - Ouigawa Tetsudou o Hashirou!, which loosely translates to "Railway Japan! Every Route: Thomas the Tank Engine Edition - Let's Run the Oigawa Railway!") is a train driving simulation game developed and published by Sonic Powered for the Nintendo 3DS in Japan on July 28, 2016 (as a retail release) and in North America on December 7, 2017 (as a downloadable title).
The seventh title in the Japanese Rail Sim 3D series (and the sequel to Joumou Denki Tetsudou-hen), Travel of Steam follows the Ōigawa Railway's main passenger line (the Ōigawa Main Line) in the Japanese Shizuoka Prefecture (from Shin-Kanaya in Shimada to Senzu in Kawanehon). Unlike the rest of the series, this entry has players driving a traditional steam locomotive (C11-class), including controls to shovel coal into the furnace for speed control (similar to the game Kisha de Go!).
The Japanese version of the game was made as a promotional tie-in with the Thomas & Friends CGI children's television series (as the railway features special real-life events with the C11 227, which is repainted and detailed to resemble Thomas the Tank Engine), and features a bonus game mode for younger players that allows them to drive trains from the series.
